June 23rd 2023, Barcelona – Marko Muru will join the RX2e season for two races. Before stepping into the support class of FIA World Rallycross Championship, the former RX Academy event-winner has won multiple domestic Rallycross Championships. He will be racing for SET Promotion Team.
The Estonian driver, a reigning title-winner in the Estonian and Latvian-Lithuanian Rallycross Championships, will race the ZEROID X1 in the Swedish and Belgian rounds of the series this year. “As the 2022 season was really successful for me, we looked for options to compete again at international level in 2023 and RX2e seemed the best option”, Muru states as his reasons to join the RX2e Championship.
Muru feels confident of his capabilities ahead of his first race in Höljes: “After I tested the car I was certain that is the way to go, I felt right at home. Höljes has always been my favorite track and having raced there already three times with RX Academy I know that it suits me well and I was always fast there. Of course this time there will be a lot of new things for me to learn but I hope that I can adapt to everything and give it my best. To race in a World RX event has really been the goal since the beginning of my rallycross career and to do it now at the most legendary Höljes is really a dream come true.”
The 19-year-old previously took part in the SET Promotion-run RX Academy series, claiming an outright win at Höljes in 2019 and finishing third in the standings the previous campaign. Since, he has claimed the Baltic Rallycross Championship’s Super1600 crown, along with his latest achievements in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
Kalle Pinomäki, from SET Promotion, takes pride in helping young drivers: “We have known Marko for some time now, with him joining us in RX Academy and he has good natural ability. SET has always put effort into helping young drivers on their career paths, and even though we are not running the car for Marko in the events he will do in RX2e this year, it is behind the scenes where we have assisted in this instance. Marko was fast in RX Academy, and since then he has also impressed with his success in the Baltic Championships, so we are very much looking forward to him taking this next step into RX2e.” Muru tested the RX2e machine in Spain earlier this year, and will join a strong field of competitors for his RX2e debut next week at Holjes in Sweden (July 1-2), the second round of the series running as part of the famous ‘Magic Weekend’ event. Muru will then return to the championship for the penultimate round at Mettet in Belgium (August 5-6). The all-electric RX2e car will be operated by series promotors QEV Technologies.
